What If A Man Was Created In A Moment?
TRANSCRIPT
If you entered a room and found this man… how old would you guess he is?
What if scientists were presented with the first man of the bible, Adam. Having examined his muscular frame, fully developed organs, hair length and beard stubble, height, and nail and teeth growth, they could reasonably conclude that he was about the age of 30 years old. Reading the expert report we nod in agreement with the scientific method, and rational calculation.
If someone suggested that this same Adam was not even a day old – they would be dramatically mocked. And yet, we learn in Genesis that on the sixth day of creation “God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature” (Gen 2:7). He made Adam in a moment. Rather than creating Adam a new born baby unable to survive, God created Adam a mature man ready to run, work, worship, right off the bat.
In the same way when scientists study the universe, they determine an age of billions of years. After all, light travels a certain speed, and the distance it has reached requires billions of years and so forth. Without God and his Word – it’s reasonable to believe vast aeons of time have elapsed from the beginning.
And yet, God didn’t create Adam and place him in muddy field with a bag of seeds, telling him to wait months before he can eat. No, He created a perfectly designed mature man, and placed him in a beautifully mature garden, on a mature earth, surrounded by mature heavens, within his mature universe which he created just days before.
It all depends on how you view Adam. If you are of a worldview in which there is no God, then sure, you hold no alternative other than to believe the theory of evolution and view the scriptures in mocking light. However, if you view Adam through the lens of scripture, with a worldview that believes in the great all-powerful God that can create a man from the dust of the ground in a moment, then likewise, based on the biblical timeline it would be perfectly reasonable to believe that the of the age of the universe is approximately 6000 years old.
It’s why some scientists from the areas of biology to astronomy who are of a Christian worldview, trusting God’s Word, recognise that the universe was created mature in 6, 24-hour days.
What we agree on, is that it’s clear from all perspectives of science and the scriptures that there is a beginning and an end to the story. The question is, how, and significantly, why.
